Travel to your bucket list destinations
A lot of times people choose destinations based off of their bucket list. Having a travel bucket list is a great way to keep track of all the places you want to travel to. If you don’t already have a travel bucket list, or want to add more destinations to your current bucket list, check out my 30 things to do before 30 travel edition post! I put together 30 amazing things to do around the world that are definitely worth seeing!
Once you have your travel bucket list, go through the list and see where you want to travel to next. Take the below tips to determine which destination is best to go to first.

Follow travel pages for inspiration
A great way to figure out where your next travel destination is going to be is by following different travel pages. There are so many travel pages on social media that post dreamy pictures and destination information. This is a great way to discover new places, what to do, and see firsthand from someone traveling there. You can check out my Instagram where I post a lot of travel content from the 50+ countries I’ve traveled to, along with different travel tips and destination information!
Travel to seasonal or big events around the world
This is one of my favorite ways to figure out where my next vacation destination is. Look at different events going on around the world. You can look at holidays, religious celebrations, festivals, seasons, seasonal activities, big events, etc. Some examples include: Holi festival in India, Carnival in Brazil, tulip festival in Holland, Oktoberfest in Germany, cherry blossoms in Japan, etc.
There are so many amazing seasonal and big events that take place all around the world. It’s so special to choose a destination solely based off of a big event that is happening. It’s so fun being able to explore a country and it feels like a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
Consider the type of trip you want
What kind of trip are you looking to do? Relax? Solo trip? Adventure? Sightsee? Consider the type of trip you want to have. The type of trip you want can impact where you choose to travel to. For example, if you are wanting to relax, consider going to places with a beach or have a relax vibe. If you are wanting to relax, it wouldn’t really make sense to travel somewhere with a lot of adventure or sightseeing.
Some cities and countries are known for solo travelers. If you’re going on a solo trip, you might want to consider traveling to places that are great solo travel destinations.
Choose a destination based on your length of trip
How long is your vacation for? Is it a weekend trip? 1 week vacation? 2 week vacation? 3+ week vacation? Consider how much time you have off, as that will greatly affect where your next vacation destination is. If you only have a week off, it wouldn’t really make sense to travel somewhere that requires a 24+ hour travel time. You would want to choose a destination that is more close by and somewhere that wouldn’t waste a lot of travel days.
If you’re planning to do a gap year, career break, or travel long-term, that also will greatly affect where and how you choose your destinations. Round-the-world (RTW) travel is a whole different ball game. There’s a lot of strategy when it comes to choosing your destinations and routing it properly. If you want to learn more, and learn my signature RTW framework, join my Travel the World Academy™ program! In the Academy, you will also learn how much money you need to travel long-term, tons of travel tips, how to travel with little money, how to make money while traveling the world, how to confidently and safely solo travel, how to become a travel master, and SO much more!
Factor in your budget for your next vacation destination
Another way to determine your next vacation destination is through your budget. How much money do you have/willing to spend on your trip? If you’re looking to not spend a lot of money, consider choosing your next vacation destination somewhere that will fit within your budget. You can look for places where your currency can go further and/or has a good exchange rate.
Some destinations and countries are known to be expensive. So if you’re looking for a budget-friendly vacation, try to avoid the expensive countries. However, if you’re willing to spend the money, you can add a lot more destinations to choose from.
Travel to destinations with the perfect weather for you
Having good weather is so important when you’re deciding where your next vacation destination is. You don’t want to travel somewhere and have it be raining the entire time or have bad weather where you can’t enjoy a lot of the activities. Choose your destination based off of the perfect weather you’re looking for. So if you’re wanting to go somewhere with colder climate, search for places based off of that. Or if you’re wanting somewhere with warmer climate, search for places based off of that.
If you’re not sure where you want to travel to and you want good weather, search online “best weather destinations in (insert month you’re traveling)” or “best places to travel in (insert month you’re traveling)”. When you do that, you can find a list of different destinations that have great weather for the month that you’re traveling!
If you already know where you want to travel to next, search online “what is the weather like in (country) during (month)”. That way you can make sure you’re traveling to somewhere that has good weather.

Make sure the destination is open
As of now, it’s harder to travel to certain countries due to COVID. Before booking a flight, you want to make sure that country is open, if there are any curfews or restrictions, if there’s a mandatory vaccination requirement, etc. At the time of this post, things are constantly changing too. Even if a country was open when you booked your flight, it might not be open when you depart. Always stay up to date on your destination.
Travel somewhere with the cheapest flight
This is my favorite way to choose my next vacation destination. I use this option frequently as it’s a really great way to get cheap travel (and we all love saving money on travel, am I right?!) and end up in amazing places around the world. What you can do is go on Skyscanner or Google Flights, search “everywhere” as your destination and “cheapest month” as your dates. It will populate a list of different countries and destinations you can fly to for cheap!
Here’s an example of a list of places someone can travel to from San Francisco International Airport:

That’s 11 different countries you can travel to for under $140. Traveling does not need to be expensive, and I don’t want money to be the reason why you’re not traveling. Using this feature on flight search engines is a great way for you to find low-cost options! You can also check out my post on 10 different ways to travel inexpensively and my other post on money mistakes you might be making abroad (so you can make sure you’re not throwing money down the drain while traveling!).
Try this out and let me know where you end up!
As you can see, there are so many different ways on how you can choose your next vacation destination. You can go based off the cheapest flight, weather, budget, type of trip, etc.
Let me know in the comments where you’re traveling to next! I would love to see where you’re heading to!
